The best beaches in Uluwatu.

White cliffs, hidden coves and the clearest water on the island. A local guide from the team at La Calma.

The Bukit peninsula holds the most dramatic coastline in Bali: limestone cliffs, powder-white coves and water that goes from jade to deep blue. These are the beaches we send our guests to, in the order we would do them.

1. Melasti Beach

The showpiece. A road cut straight through white cliffs opens onto calm, clear water that is actually swimmable at most tides, rare for the Bukit. Go before 9am for the light and the quiet. It is minutes from La Calma, which is exactly why our guests tend to go twice.

2. Pandawa Beach

Melasti's neighbour, a long golden stretch below carved cliff statues of the five Pandawa brothers. Calm water, canoes for rent, and warungs serving young coconuts on the sand. The most family-friendly beach on this list.

3. Bingin Beach

A steep staircase down through cliffside homes opens onto Uluwatu's most charming beach village. Surfers ride the famous left, everyone else eats grilled fish at sunset with their feet in the sand. Low tide reveals rock pools worth the scramble.

4. Padang Padang

Small, photogenic and famous, entered through a cave-like cleft in the rock. Come early or late; midday belongs to the crowds. In surf season, watch world-class barrels from the warung above.

5. Thomas Beach

The quiet achiever between Padang Padang and Uluwatu. A long stair keeps the day-trippers away, leaving white sand, a handful of umbrellas and some of the clearest swimming water on the peninsula.

6. Nyang Nyang

Wide, wild and almost empty, at the bottom of a long cliff path. No clubs, no music, just a kilometre of sand you might share with a handful of people. Take water, and take your rubbish home.

7. Suluban (Blue Point)

Less a beach than an experience: wooden stairs wind down through a cave to a slice of sand between cliff walls, where surfers paddle out to the legendary Uluwatu break. Best at low tide, unforgettable at sunset from the cliff bars above.
