What the butler looks after, how a chef dinner at home works, and what to ask for before you land.
"Butler" and "private chef" appear on a lot of villa listings in Bali, and they can mean very different things from one house to the next. If you are searching for a villa with a private chef and butler in Uluwatu, it helps to know what you are actually booking before you arrive. This is how it works at La Calma de Celine, our two-bedroom private pool villa in Kutuh, written plainly so there are no surprises.
The short version: the butler makes the villa run smoothly around you, and the chef is someone who comes in for an evening and cooks a full dinner in the villa's kitchen. Both are arranged ahead, and both work best when you tell us what you want early.
Think of the butler as the person who makes the house easy to live in. The villa is cleaned and set up for you, linen and towels are looked after, and the small practical things are handled before you have to think about them. Send a shopping list and the groceries are bought and put away, with the shopping itself charged by receipt.
The butler is also your single point of contact for everything you want to add to the stay. A private chef dinner, the floating breakfast, a massage therapist who comes to the villa, decoration for a birthday or a proposal, a driver for the day, or a scooter or car delivered to the gate: you ask once, and it is organised.
A villa butler in Bali is not a bartender or a waiter, and it is worth saying so clearly. Our team does not mix cocktails or mocktails, and does not offer table or pool service. If you picture someone bringing drinks to the sun lounger all afternoon, that is a resort with a bar, not a private house.
What you get instead is privacy. Nobody hovers. The villa is ready when you wake up and when you come back from the beach, and the rest of the day is yours.
Give the butler at least two days' notice. That time is used to agree the menu with you, to ask about allergies and dietary needs, and to plan the shopping. On the day, the chef shops for fresh ingredients, cooks in the villa's designer kitchen, plates and serves each course, then leaves the kitchen clean.
Menus lean fresh and local. Popular directions are Jimbaran-style grilled seafood, Indonesian classics cooked properly, and lighter Mediterranean plates. Allergies and dietary needs are planned in advance rather than improvised on the night, so tell us when you book the dinner, not when you sit down.
The chef dinner is an extra, confirmed with you and settled before the evening. Our page on the private chef dinner has more detail.
Uluwatu has excellent restaurants, and you should go to some of them. But evenings on the Bukit involve narrow roads, sunset traffic and a drive home in the dark. Jimbaran Bay, the classic seafood dinner on the sand, is about 18 to 35 minutes from the villa on a weekday, or 22 to 45 minutes if you leave at four.
A chef at home removes all of that. The pool is lit, the music is yours, children can go to bed when they are tired, and nobody needs to stay sober for the drive. It suits the first night, when the flight is still in your legs, the last night before an early airport run, and the evening after a long beach club day.
The floating breakfast is the other thing people ask about. Tell the butler the evening before and choose a time, and a woven tray of tropical fruit, pastries, juice and coffee is set floating at the pool steps. Between about seven and eight the light on the water is softest, if you want photographs. It is booked ahead and arranged as an extra, like the chef dinner. See the floating breakfast page for the details.
A little planning gets the most out of both. A good order of things:
