Our next-door neighbour on the Bukit: cliffs, coves, beach clubs and a very large statue.
If you are searching for things to do in Ungasan, start with the map: this is the part of Bali's Bukit peninsula where the land ends in white limestone cliffs, and almost everything worth a day out is tucked into them. Our villa, La Calma de Celine, is in Kutuh, the village right next door, so Ungasan is the neighbourhood we send our own guests to first.
Ungasan sits in the Kuta Selatan district of Badung, between Kutuh and Pecatu. The best parts are a short drive apart, so a day here never needs more than one or two car rides.
About 9 to 10 minutes, 3.6 km. The closest Ungasan beach to us is a small cove at the bottom of a long flight of steps, with a cave at one end and a reef break that surfers use. The climb keeps it quiet. Go at low tide, when there is more sand, and take water with you. It is not the beach for small children, or for anyone who would rather not walk back up.
About 12 to 18 minutes, 5.4 km. Melasti is the Ungasan beach on the postcards: a road that curves down between white cliffs to calm, clear water. Go before nine for soft light and space on the sand. Midday is crowded, and the cliff blocks the late sun on parts of the beach. Two clubs sit on the sand, Palmilla and the adults-only Tropical Temptation, which we compare in our guide to the beach clubs on Melasti. For a morning on the sand itself, see our Melasti Beach guide.
About 14 to 20 minutes, 6.0 km. Sundays sits at the foot of the Ungasan cliffs and is reached by an inclinator, a small cliff lift, which is half the fun. Its own site lists kayaks, paddle boards and snorkelling (tide permitting), and an evening bonfire on the sand. It suits families and couples who want a full day by the water and a sunset to finish. Book ahead in busy periods. We have written a longer comparison with its clifftop neighbour in Savaya or Sundays, and our page on staying near Sundays Beach Club has more.
About 12 to 20 minutes, 4.9 km. Garuda Wisnu Kencana is the cultural park around the giant statue of the god Vishnu riding the mythical bird Garuda, the work of the Indonesian sculptor I Nyoman Nuarta. You can see the statue from much of the Bukit. Inside are wide plazas, shops, restaurants and regular dance performances. Check the day's programme on the park's own website before you go. Late afternoon is a comfortable time to arrive, and it is an easy outing with family or first-time visitors.
The order matters more than the list. Our suggestion for a day that never feels rushed:
Notice what this leaves out: the west coast. Ungasan is the nearer half of the Bukit. Uluwatu Temple and the famous sunset spots are 24 to 45 minutes away and longer at four in the afternoon, so give them a day of their own, as in our sunset guide.
A car with a driver is the easy way. The roads down to the beaches are steep and narrow, there is little shade, and walking between sights is not practical.
La Calma de Celine is a two-bedroom private pool villa in Kutuh for up to four guests, with a seven-metre sunken living room, butler service, a private chef on request and Starlink wifi. It is never shared: one booking at a time. Most of this guide is between 9 and 20 minutes from the gate.
Guests who book direct get one free drop-off each day from the villa to Uluwatu, Pecatu, Ungasan, Jimbaran or Nusa Dua. That covers Melasti in the morning or Sundays in the afternoon; it is a drop-off, and the ride back is arranged separately. When you are ready, check your dates, or read our guide to Kutuh for the other side of the border.
